Adventures in Improv
Creating connection, confidence, and possibility through improv
The Blue Door Theatre believes improv is for everyone. Through Adventures in Improv, we bring the creativity, collaboration, and joy of improvisational theatre to incarcerated individuals at Airway Heights Corrections Center.
This eight-week program introduces participants to the foundations of improv through games, exercises, and scene work. No previous performance experience is needed. Our students only need a willingness to participate, listen, take creative risks, and support one another. The program is held about 4 times a year.
More Than Making People Laugh
Improv may be playful, but the skills it develops are meaningful. Participants practice how to:
-
Listen and respond in the moment
-
Communicate clearly
-
Collaborate with others
-
Build trust
-
Adapt when things do not go as planned
-
Take positive risks
-
Express themselves creatively
-
Strengthen their confidence
Improv creates a space where participants can try something new, make discoveries together, and experience the connection that comes from creating as an ensemble. Laughter is part of the experience, but so are teamwork, personal growth, and the opportunity to be seen and heard.
The response to the program has demonstrated that these opportunities matter. When the first course was offered, all 15 spaces filled within three days and additional participants joined a waiting list. Since our first course in 2024, we have consistently filled our courses with interested in students.
